Success Story Powered By New York MEP Regional Center MTEC

Montgomery, New York based Russin (formerly Russin Lumber Company) is a supplier of quality building materials that has been in business since 1957.  They pride themselves in evolving the business over three generations of family management to meet the changing needs of their clients – from designers to contractors and homeowners as they turn to Russin for guidance on their projects.  They are renowned for their variety of products ready to meet nearly any budget.

Russin approached consultant Phil VanOss of MTEC, member of the New York Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) and the MEP National Network, for assistance in managing their business in times of changing demand.  As business declines, the business struggled to be profitable.  They believed that adopting lean methodologies would help maintain profitability volatile demand.

With a initial focus on the order to fulfillment process, MTEC’s Phil VanOss did a value stream mapping exercise and identified improvements in the process to be implemented.  An action plan was created to implement the improvements and expand lean methods to other areas of the business.

We started our Lean journey with MTEC with Value Stream Mapping, but quickly saw the value that Phil VanOss and MTEC would have in maintaining the momentum of continuous improvement. We would not be where we are today if we did not engage with MTEC!

— Adam Russin, Co-President

Results of the engagement included:

  • $250,000 in new investment
  • $50,000 in cost savings
  • 3 jobs created or retained
