GlobalFoundaries is one of the leading computer chip manufacturers in the world. Their most advanced facility is based in Malta, NY where their semiconductor manufacturing is done around the clock. Vital to that operation are the maintenance technicians that monitor and look after the equipment and processes, predominantly in their cleanroom environments. With an operation the size of GlobalFoundaries Malta facility, they need a continuous pipeline of talent in order to maintain their busy facility’s production schedule. This is done through the hiring and training of new college graduates, industry experienced professionals and even prior military embarking on civilian careers.
In order to operationalize this, GlobalFoundaries partnered with the Center for Economic Growth (CEG), Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC), the Manufacturers Association of Central New York (MACNY), and the National Institute for Innovation and Technology (NIIT). CEG is the Capital District New York MEP Center and member of the MEP National Network™. CEG acts as sponsor for GlobalFoundaries’ Maintenance Technical Apprenticeship Program working with state agencies on behalf of GlobalFoundaries, managing the program’s records, reporting, and coordinating required courses.
The apprenticeship program has attracted a diverse applicant pool in the region, ranging from recent high school graduates to those looking to change careers, as well as reaching candidates from underrepresented populations.
